The album contains three opportunity cantatas and two church cantatas from Telemann's vast vocal oeuvre. The works were all written for King George I, who became King of England from the Elector of Hanover, and each of the three occasion cantatas is for the king's birthday, a piece to honor his achievements, and a funeral service. In each piece, the king's iconic trumpet plays an active role, and the music expresses the full range of gratitude and sorrow for the monarch. The man honored here is George (Georg) I (1660-1727), born in Hanover in the Holy Roman Empire. His mother, Zophie, was of the blood of King James I of England, and when the Stewart dynasty fell with the fall of Princess Anne, he was received as King of Great Britain at the age of 54, becoming the founder of the Hanoverian dynasty and holding this position until his death. He is also known for Handel's writing of music on the water for King George I. Telemann succeeds in portraying the thoughts and feelings of the king's admirers in a wonderful piece of music.
