One of the most serene masterpieces of the French Baroque, performed at Versailles by an elite ensemble of European early music specialists Couperin is known as a master of harpsichord music. During his lifetime, he was also active as an organist and left behind no small number of masterpieces in the realm of church music. Among these, *Le Sonnet des Ténèbres* is renowned as an outstanding masterpiece—a serene composition based on verses from the Old Testament book of *Lamentations*, which were chanted at dawn during the final week of Lent, the period of abstinence preceding Easter. At a time when it was customary to perform Lent music as simply as possible with as few instruments as possible, these three masterpieces—featuring solos and duets—accompanied only by a basso continuo—weave a surprisingly rich sonic world. While there have been no shortage of recordings of these three masterpieces in the past, this album—recorded in Versailles by a select group of elite musicians active in the French early music scene who took their time with the recording—exudes a powerful charm with its rich, fragrant sound. Another highlight is the inclusion of the rare *Petits Motets* by de Lalande, a contemporary of Couperin who succeeded Lully as director of Louis XIV’s Royal Chapel. Stéphane Fuget, who has earned a solid reputation in the French early music scene, masterfully brings together a lineup of notable performers, including Sophie Junker from Belgium—who is steadily gaining attention in both the early music world and the European opera scene—and lutenist Lucile Boulanger, who has released numerous solo recordings on the ALPHA label.
