[A Collection of Songs and Dances That Capture the Spirit of 17th-Century Spain and Italy] La Voz Garana was formed in 2011 by students of the Schola Cantorum in Basel with the aim of introducing early music from Spain and Latin America. Following the acclaim of their Spanish album—centered on Matías Durango and released on the Lindoro label—the ensemble now presents a collection of works by Spanish and Italian composers active in 17th-century Italy, performed in a simple ensemble consisting of two plucked string instruments and a baritone. From works by relatively well-known composers such as Capsberger and Randi to pieces based on folk traditions, all were written to capture the spirit of folk songs. Many of these works exude the vibrant Mediterranean folk spirit of the time, and the lyrics often walk a fine line between candor and poetic sentiment. The powerful, rhythmic music remains highly accessible even today and possesses an irresistible charm. True to their group name—which means “radiant voices”—this album allows listeners to fully savor the beautiful, resonant, and lustrous vocals of Sebastián León, perfectly complemented by a well-coordinated instrumental ensemble.
