Last year, Kazuki Yamada made his debut with the Berlin Philharmonic as the first Japanese conductor to do so in 14 years—following in the footsteps of Seiji Ozawa and Yutaka Sado—and this year he assumed the position of Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of the Berlin German Symphony Orchestra, marking the beginning of his career as a world-class conductor. With the Yomiuri Symphony Orchestra, where he served as Principal Guest Conductor from April 2018 to March 2024—even amid the COVID-19 pandemic—he tackled a wide-ranging repertoire, from masterpieces to lesser-known works, and his programming consistently drew attention. In particular, he has actively highlighted the works of Japanese composers—a focus he has dedicated himself to as a lifelong pursuit—introducing pieces by Sadao Bekku, Saburo Moroi, Akio Yashiro, and others. This recording features Toru Takemitsu’s masterpiece “November Steps,” which was performed in 2024 with two of Japan’s leading virtuosos: Fujiwara Dōzan on the shakuhachi and Tomoyoshi Tsurushin on the biwa. This is a valuable recording featuring a work that Japan proudly presents to the world, performed by a distinguished conductor and a group of master musicians.
