Description:

This album features percussion ensemble works for up to 10 marimbas. The selection ranges from familiar classics—such as American folk songs and their Japanese counterparts—to innovative contemporary pieces, including four world premiere recordings and one Japanese premiere recording. Experience the rich, varied, and deep sound produced by the marimba orchestra. This album clearly demonstrates possibilities distinct from those of a single marimba. [Shinichi Ueno & Phonics Reflection] A percussion group formed in 1988 by multi-percussionist Shinichi Ueno alongside soloists active both in Japan and abroad. They hold concerts annually; in 2009, they presented “Akira Nishimura: The Universe of Percussion,” a concert featuring an all-Akira Nishimura program, and performed with Keiko Abe; in 2010, they held “Soul of Percussion,” a concert featuring works exclusively by N.J. Zivkovic; and in 2011, they performed “The Spirit of Percussion 2011” with Jivkovic himself as a guest artist. In 2013, they gave the world premiere of Akira Nishimura’s opera *Bhakavada Gita* at Suntory Hall; the performance was re-recorded by NHK in 2015 and broadcast on BS Premium’s “Classic Club.” The ensemble was invited to perform at the 2014 Croatia International Percussion Festival and the 2015 Romania International Percussion Festival, receiving favorable reviews at both events. The Phonics Marimba Orchestra, a new ensemble, is creating a fresh and diverse realm of orchestral percussion centered around keyboard instruments such as the marimba and vibraphone. [Shinichi Ueno] He graduated at the top of his class from Kunitachi College of Music. He has received numerous awards, including first prize in the advanced division of the Concours des Conservatoires de France and a special prize in the percussion category at the Paris International Contemporary Music Competition. He has served as a percussionist with the Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra and as principal percussionist and timpanist with the Toulouse Capitole Orchestra. He is also active as a soloist and has premiered over 60 new works. In 2007, he received critical acclaim for his invited performances overseas, including at the World Congress of Percussion Art (PASIC) and the PASIC Europe conference in Paris. He continues to expand the scope of his activities through collaborations with artists such as Yuji Takahashi and Keiko Abe. He is the director of the percussion groups “Shinichi Ueno & Phonics Reflection” and “Ensemble Musica Vivante.” He is also a part-time lecturer at Kunitachi College of Music.
