Adam Larum, winner of the Clara Haskil International Piano Competition; cellist Victor Julien-Laferrière, who took second place at the Markneukirchen International Competition and has earned high acclaim primarily in France; Joining them is violinist Misa Yang, a native of Osaka who studied at the Paris Conservatoire. Together, they form the Trio Les Esprits. They first performed together in 2009, found a musical connection, and officially formed the piano trio in 2012. Since their debut at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, they have participated in numerous music festivals, including La Folle Journée and the Deauville Easter Festival, and—despite having been together for only two years—have attracted the attention of music professionals worldwide. For this debut album, they have selected works by Beethoven and Schumann that showcase completely different characters. Beethoven’s Piano Trio No. 6 is a relatively understated piece sandwiched between the masterpieces “The Ghost” and “The Archduke,” yet it captivates with its rich musical ideas and gentle melodies. In the energetic and lively finale, the trio showcases their intimate ensemble playing, profound musicality, and a performance brimming with youthful vitality. In contrast, in Schumann’s introspective and dramatic Piano Trio No. 3, they deliver a powerful performance imbued with intense emotion. This piece encapsulates Schumann’s finest qualities—a unique tension created by alternating anxiety and passion, along with beautiful, sweet melodies that make one sigh involuntarily—and can rightly be called one of the masterpieces that crowned Schumann’s final years, marked by mental illness. The most impressive performer in this recording is violinist Misa Ryō. While her playing is typically characterized by an open display of emotion, her performance of this Schumann piece is particularly striking—as if all the passion within her had burst forth at once.
