Description:
A new album that sheds light on the extraordinary talent of female composers who have been overlooked in the history of piano music Hyperion is releasing “Women and the Piano,” an album by Susan Tomes—a leading British pianist and writer—who set out to give female composers and pianists, long overshadowed by history, the recognition they deserve. This is Tomes’ first solo album; it traces 250 years of piano music history and features works by Clara Schumann, Fanny Mendelssohn, Cécile Chaminade, and the prominent American composer Amy Beach, alongside compositions by at least seven largely unknown female composers. There are also surprising discoveries, such as the “Sonata in A Major” by Marianne Martínez, Haydn’s first piano student, and the “Capriccio” by Maria Szymanowska, the renowned Polish pianist who was appointed the first-ever court pianist at the St. Petersburg court of the Russian empress. The album also includes a captivating “Romance” by Sophie Menter, Liszt’s beloved pupil whom he praised as “the very embodiment of the piano,” as well as “The Dream Ball” by the Venezuelan composer Teresa Carreño, composed in 1869. “The Dream Ball” is an intriguing piece that seems to incorporate a quote from the melody of “Happy Birthday to You.” The album concludes with a piece by Raí da Costa, one of the leading light music pianists of his time, who died prematurely in 1934. By selecting relatively short pieces, Tomes aims to introduce as many unknown talents as possible. “In all my years of studying the piano, I was never once recommended works by female composers,” says Tomes. This album complements Tomes’ book *Women and the Piano* (Yale University Press, 2024), in which she meticulously traces the history, music, and lives of female pianists who have made their mark across the ages. In her liner notes, based on thoughtful and meticulous research, she presents the remarkable biographies of each of these women and reveals their extraordinary talents. Susan Tomes toured for 17 years with the chamber music ensemble “Domus,” and her innovative work earned her the Royal Philharmonic Society Award as well as three Gramophone Awards. “Susan Tomes distills the essence of musical works into their purest form in the most profound and moving way”—*The Scotsman* Universal Music/IMS
