As these challenging times continue, it is essential to find glimmers of hope on the horizon. The future is often opaque and hazy. Yet it is hope for a brighter future that gives us the power to imagine a light of hope beyond the fog. In his new album *Mist*, the final chapter of a musical trilogy recorded with his long-time collaborators as a quartet, violist, improviser, and composer Matt Maneri expresses precisely that sentiment. Maneri is known for establishing a unique style as a violist and for engaging in compelling collaborations with improvisers across various genres. Over the past seven years, Maneri has focused on the quartet format as a platform for presenting his music. The group features musicians with whom Maneri has performed for decades, including drummer Randy Peterson, bassist John Herbert, and pianist Lucian Baan. The quartet was formed out of Maneri’s desire to release a collection of musical works and create a trilogy of albums with a cohesive tone. Released in 2019, *Dust* (Sunnyside Records) was an ephemeral work that sought to capture the spirit of jazz. *Ash* (Sunnyside Records, 2023) deconstructed that initial attempt and was conceived as an experiment in memory centered on grief. As the quartet’s identity matured, Maneri began listening to the voices of his bandmates, allowing them to inspire his own work. The album also incorporates pianist Lucian Baan’s compositional talents, with half of the tracks on *Mist* written by him. The music on *Mist* incorporates elements from the previous two albums, moving toward a kind of resolution. It leads from the hazy atmosphere of *Dust* and *Ash* to the faintly hopeful tranquility of *Mist*. This recording was made on April 23, 2025, at Tedesco Studios in New Jersey. The program opens with Maneri’s “Through the Mist.” The title is inspired by Ingmar Bergman’s film *The Woman in the Mirror*. This piece was the first to be recorded during the session, and its fresh, liberated performance—shifting from darkness into the mist—is particularly striking. Van’s “Fragments of God” is a delicate yet majestic piece with a gospel-like resonance. The gospel tones reveal the deep influence Maneri has drawn from his musical interactions with his parents.
