VAN BEINUM,EDUARD

Description:

Van Beinum's new, sensitive Mahler playing can be enjoyed on this newly remastered Decca recording of the complete legacy of renowned Mahler aficionado Eduard van Beinum. The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra has had the closest and longest relationship with Mahler's music. It was a relationship fostered between the composer and the orchestra's second music director, Willem Mengelberg, and it continues to this day. Eduard van Beinum succeeded Mengelberg in 1945, but he did not follow in the footsteps of his predecessor and was not at first a very active Mahler enthusiast, partly because he saw a neurotic element in Mahler's music. Nevertheless, as the accompanying booklet makes clear in its assessment of van Beinum's new and sensitive approach to this music, he performs the pieces he has chosen with devotion and invites the listener's sympathy. Not long after signing as a Decca artist in 1946, he recorded Mahler's cycle of songs, Songs of a Wandering Youth, not in Amsterdam, but with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Polish mezzo-soprano Evgenia Zaleska. He then returned to the Netherlands and in 1952 recorded Mahler's Fourth Symphony, his most classically produced work and thus well suited to van Beinum's musical constitution. Four years later, Eduard van Beinum recorded the "Song of the Earth," with highly sensitive singing by tenor Ernst Hefliger and especially contralto Nan Merriman. The recording was recognized as comparable to the highly acclaimed recordings by Ferrier, Walter, and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra of this period.Merinan also participated in the re-recording of van Beinum's last Mahler recording, Songs of a Wandering Youth; all four recordings were combined together for the first time on Decca.
