The "Vienna Philharmonic Summer Night Concert" is one of the most famous events of the Vienna Philharmonic, along with the New Year's Concert, and has become an established tradition of early summer in Vienna since 2008. The open-air concert, held at Schönbrunn Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is free of charge and open to 100,000 music fans, and is broadcast live (or recorded) to more than 60 countries around the world. The concert has been known to feature distinguished conductors such as Gergiev, Dudamel, Barenboim, Welser-Möst, and last year in 2013, Maazel, and this year, Christoph Eschenbach and Lan Lan on piano will appear.The pair's performance of Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 1, which they performed during their 2011 visit to Japan with the Vienna Philharmonic, is still fresh in the memory of this powerful and beautiful performance. During Eschenbach's time with the Paris Philharmonic, they also recorded a joint performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto. The Eschenbach/Vienna Philharmonic and Lang Lang will tour the Czech Republic and Germany in the second half of May, followed by a performance at Schönbrunn Palace. The program is a colorful collection of works that will allow the audience to enjoy the orchestra's magnificent virtuosity in an open-air concert setting. The program includes two works by R. Strauss, who celebrates the 150th anniversary of his birth this year, and "The Delightful Mischief of Till Eulenspiegel," one of his most popular works, will be performed first. From the horn solo at the beginning, the colorful wind section of the Vienna Philharmonic is in full swing.A concerto piece written for piano and orchestra, "Bulleske" is known for its superb technical demands on the piano, and was a favorite of Glenn Gould. This is the first recording for Lan-Lan. The recording of Berlioz by the Vienna Philharmonic is relatively rare: "Carnival of Rome" has not been recorded since the Kempe recording (EMI) in 1958, and "Benvenuto Cellini" has only been recorded in its entirety in 2007 under Gergiev's direction. Liszt's "Mazeppa" has also not been recorded since 1996 on Sinopoli (DG). The only previous recording of Eschenbach and the Vienna Philharmonic was an R. Strauss album (Decca, 1998), so you will enjoy the way the Vienna Philharmonic responds vividly with its finest tone and ultimate ensemble under Eschenbach's precise conducting, as if he were painting a miniature painting.
