Masterful arrangement by Stefan Koncz! Daniel Ottensamer's recording of Brahms' Clarinet Sonata with orchestral accompaniment! Daniel Ottenzamer is the principal clarinetist of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. He is currently active in many fields as a soloist and chamber musician, and his activities in Japan are highly anticipated, as he will be the Artist-in-Residence of the Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra from the 2024/25 season. His debut recording on the PENTATONE label is with the Deutsches Symphonieorchester Berlin under the baton of Stefan Koncz! The two clarinet sonatas, masterpieces of Brahms' later years, are recorded in a clarinet and orchestra version arranged by Koncz. Koncz, currently a cellist with the Berlin Philharmonic, is a multi-talented composer, arranger, and conductor. In this arrangement, Koncz has freed himself from the "limited space" of chamber music and has created a large musical work without sacrificing the splendor of the original. The coupling is Walter Lovell's (1873-1940) Quartet for clarinet, violin, cello, and piano, which is also included on this album.The work is a career achievement for Lovell, who won first prize in the composition competition sponsored by the Musikverein in Vienna, of which Brahms was the honorary president. It is a pleasure to see this hidden masterpiece included in this collection, as it is rarely performed nowadays. The recording was realized with the splendid members Christoph Traxler on piano, Noah Bendix-Balgry on violin, and Koncz, who have long performed together as members of the virtuoso group "Philharmoniks".
