Featuring Charles Hayward (drums/keyboards/tapes/vocals), who was active in the QUIETSUN scene and around Phil Manzanera, and Charles Bullen (g/cla/vla/vo), who frequently performed with Hayward in bands like RADAR FAVORITES and QUIETSUN after Hayward left Manzanera, joined forces with Gareth Williams (b/key/g/vo/tape) to form this legendary British avant-garde rock/ post-punk band, formed in 1976 when Gareth Williams (b/key/g/vo/tape) joined Charles Hayward (drs/key/tapes/vo) and Charles Bullen (g/cla/vla/vo)—two musicians who had performed together frequently with Hayward in groups like RADAR FAVORITES and QUIETSUN following their departure from Manzanera. Their 1979 debut album, originally released by the UK label Piano, is now being reissued on vinyl in 2026 by the US label Superior Viaduct! Symbolized by the transition from the serene noise of the opening track "Testcard" to the violent impulsiveness and sharpness of "Horizontal Hold," this album showcases the members’ full creative potential through improvisation and sound processing/construction enabled by technological advancements—resulting in a genre-defying musicality that remains unparalleled to this day.
