Description:
The debut album from the most important band in psychedelic cumbia-chicha! Los Chapis are a band from Wankayo, Peru. They are known for playing a key role in the development and popularization of chicha music. In 1981, they released their debut album, *Los Autenticos*, on the *Horoscopo* label. The album cover art is clearly an homage to the Ramones’ album *Road to Ruin*. However, aside from the use of electric guitars (albeit with a completely different playing style), the musical style of this album bears no resemblance to that of the punk band from Queens. Rather, this album showcases all the defining characteristics of chicha: the leading role of the electric guitar in the Peruvian cumbia style, and above all, the prominence of the vocals. Chicha is, at its core, a vocal-driven genre. The vocals are often drenched in deep reverb, and most importantly, the lyrics focus on the daily struggles of people from rural areas who have migrated to Peru’s cities in search of a better life. The vocal style also shows a strong Andean influence, reminiscent of “wayno,” a musical genre representative of that region. Themes of betrayal, heartbreak, loss, and hardship run throughout the entire Chicha repertoire, and tracks included on this album—such as “Tuboda,” “Borrachitoborrachon,” and “Malamigo”—are prime examples of this. The album also features Amazonian cumbia tracks like “Enlaselva” and even a bolero titled “Perdidos.” This is a must-have masterpiece that represents Chicha at its best for cumbia fans and collectors of Peruvian music, and it also serves as an ideal introduction to the genre.
