A glimpse into the intercontinental musical traffic before the Baroque! In three remote mountain villages, once inaccessible even by car, 18 choral music books were preserved and cherished by the local community for centuries. Today, these precious materials are housed in American university libraries. These collections show how music became integrated into the daily and spiritual lives of indigenous peoples and became a symbol of resistance and forced adaptation to Catholic and other outside influences. Although the collection contains numerous copies of European music, these European forms were transformed into original creations as they passed through the minds, hands, and voices of the indigenous peoples. Argentine tenor Honatan Alvarado and bijuelist Ariel Abramovici have composed an album that combines masses, motets, chansons, and bilançicos from over 350 of these works written down between 1582 and 1635. Through this selection, he offers insight into the intercontinental exchange of music between pre-Baroque Europe and the missionaries of Mesoamerica.Honatan Alvarado, who studied voice and lute at the Amsterdam Conservatory and is a performer of ancient music, has a repertoire that includes songs from medieval and Renaissance manuscripts scattered throughout the world, as well as songs from the oral traditions of Europe and the Americas. Ariel Abramovici studied lieder with Hopkinson Smith at the Schola Cantorum Basel in Switzerland. He is also a member of Da Tempera Velha, an ensemble specializing in Hispanic repertoire of late medieval and Renaissance music. Tokyo M-Plus
