A great project from the PENTATONE label! The prestigious Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, founded in 1918 by Ernest Anselme, celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2018. To commemorate this occasion, the PENTATONE label is releasing a 5-CD box set that traces the orchestra's 100-year history. The orchestra, nurtured by Anselme, has grown into a first-rate orchestra with a unique sound. Since Anselme's time, the orchestra has devoted itself to premiering modern and contemporary works and new compositions, and has also made numerous recordings. This box set offers a glimpse into the orchestra's long history, and features performances by the ten principal conductors of the past under five themes: "French Music," "German Repertoire," "20th Century Music," "Russian Music," and "Historical Documents. The program will be held at the Kulmerskirche Theater in Tokyo, Japan.The principal conductors of the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande have been Ernest Anselme (1918-1967), Paul Krecki (1967-1970), Wolfgang Sawallisch (1970-1980), Horst Stein (1980-1985), Armin Jordaan (1985- 1997), Fabio Luisi (1997-2002), Pinkas Steinberg (2002-2005), Marek Janowski (2005-2012), Neeme Järvi (2012-2015) and Jonathan Nott (2016-). This is the first-class orchestra that Anselme has built over the past 100 years of quality and excellence. The 100-page booklet includes a performance of the orchestra in its heyday, as well as rare photos and documents. CD5 features a historic recording from 1943 of Swiss composer Gustave Doré's opera "The Shepherd," conducted by Anselme.After studying with Joachim in Berlin from 1885-87, Doré went to Paris to study composition with Dubois and Massenet. Later, he worked as a concert conductor for the National Society of Music, and is best known for conducting the premiere of his friend Debussy's "Prelude to the Pastoral Afternoon" on December 23, 1894. His opera "The Shepherd" was staged at the Opéra-Comique in Paris in 1906, and was one of the works that led to his success as a composer.
