Orchestre National de France
Description:
Bernstein & Orchestre National de France's French Program of Berlioz, Roussel, and Saint-Saëns, a project commemorating the 100th anniversary of Bernstein's birth. The film of Bernstein's 1976 performance of Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique with the Orchestre National de France at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées and his 1981 French program of Roussel, Saint-Saëns, and Thomas will be released. Bernstein resigned as music director of the New York Philharmonic and moved from CBS Sony to DG in terms of recordings, making a full-scale foray into Europe in the 1970s. He recorded French programs with the Orchestre National de France for the former EMI and DG. This video is of a concert they worked on during that same period. Bernstein recorded "Symphonie fantastique" twice with the New York Philharmonic (in 1963 and 1968) and with the Orchestre National de France at the same time as this live performance.Unlike the young and brilliant performance with the New York Philharmonic, Bernstein appeared with a beard, which is unusual for Bernstein, and the synergy of Humphrey Burton's excellent camera work, the Orchestre National de France, which knows the music well, and Bernstein's personality resulted in a colorful performance. Next is Roussel's Symphony No. 3, commissioned to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Like the "Fantasy," this piece (1961) was also recorded with the New York Philharmonic. The vibrant rhythms, the colorful music, and Bernstein's vivid conducting can only be enjoyed on film. Saint-Saens' symphonic poem "The Spinning Wheel of Onfar" was first composed in a two-piano version, and the composer himself later wrote an orchestral version and a solo piano version. Based on the story of the Greek mythological hero Heracles, the work is impressive for its allusive depiction of a spinning wheel. Last but not least is the French Romantic composer Thomas. In addition to his famous "Mignon," he wrote many other operas. The overture to the opera "Lemont" is a rousing piece that was also used in the American pop song "Hushabye. You can enjoy the colorfulness characteristic of French works and the dynamic and sparkling performance typical of Bernstein with the power that only video can provide.
