MEMORIALS is a London-based mixed-gender multi-instrumental duo featuring Verity Susman, frontwoman of the Brighton-based indie girl group Electralane—who has captivated the likes of Albini and Weatherall—and Matthew Simms of the later-era Wire. This talented duo blends the sharp intellect of post-punk with experimental tape sounds within the framework of pop songs, carving out a unique psychedelic landscape. Recorded in 2026, this album was created entirely by the duo alone, holed up in a secluded barn studio nestled deep in the forests of southwestern France. Their second album crystallizes their obsessive attention to sound, featuring instruments like the harpsichord housed in the 4AD studio and vintage speakers from the studio run by Stereolab’s Andy Ramsay. The album features 12 versatile tracks, including "LIFECOULDBEACLOUD" with its daydream-like melodies, "CUTGLASSHAMMER" where sharp guitars collide with digital loops, and the danceable, dub-infused post-punk track "INTHEWEEDS." VERITYSUSMAN’s innocent vocals serve as a guiding light through the labyrinth of experimental sounds. Hailed as a unique album that seems to wrap CAN’s hypnotic grooves and NICO’s cold lyricism in DAVIDAXELROD’s production, this is a masterpiece that absorbs everything from free jazz to ’60s soul and Canterbury rock, redefining it as contemporary psychedelic pop.
