Description:

Donizetti's four-act opera "The Duke of Alba" was originally intended as a grand opera in French, but his health deteriorated and he stopped composing after completing the first two acts in 1839 (the contract with the director of the opera house was broken due to differences in religious views). The script was kept and later used by Verdi as the basis for "The Evening Bells of Sicily," with significant changes to the setting. However, the libretto was originally written by Eugène Scribe and Charles Duveillier for Allevi, but Allevi did not use it, and it was recycled from Donizetti to Verdi. The unfinished score was then translated from the libretto into Italian, supplemented by his pupil Matteo Salvi, and premiered at the Teatro Apollo in Rome on May 22, 1882; unfortunately, it was not a success.Later, in 1959, American conductor Thomas Schippers created a new edition for performances at the Spoleto Festival, but left Salvi's corrections intact. Later, Roger Parker's Critical Edition added Donizetti's own writing to the original parts before Salvi's corrections, but still did not bring the opera to the stage.
