Tracing the glory and downfall of Emperor Charles V and his turbulent life through the music of his era Charles V (Carlos I as King of Spain) was one of the most powerful emperors of the Renaissance, ruling over territories that included present-day Austria, Belgium, and Spain, while also exercising authority over Germany and Italy. This CD is an exceptionally fascinating collection of pieces related to his life. The title track, “A Thousand Sorrows”—also known as “The Emperor’s Song”—features a fluctuating musical motif that expresses the emperor’s profound anguish as he struggled to expand his realm.
