A collection of piano sonatas by the young Mendelssohn No. 1 inspired by Haydn No. 2 and No. 3 inspired by Beethoven All three of Mendelssohn's piano sonatas were written before the composer reached the age of 20. Yet they are the product of very mature music, mastering the intricacies of sonata form and infusing these three beautiful works with a wealth of his own rich musical ideas. Mendelssohn was a great piano virtuoso, a very cultured young man, and knew music of the past that was little known by his contemporaries. Thus, his music is a wonderful blend of the traditions of the past and the ideas of the Romantic period. The earliest of these sonatas was inspired by Haydn and written when Mendelssohn had not yet reached his teens. The second is a very poetic and seductive slow movement, already showing the influence of Beethoven. No. 3, written the year Beethoven passed away, is more Beethoven-influenced and is the most frequently performed of the three piano sonatas.
