Stenhammar (1871-1927)

Description:

Music that combines nobility and warmth. Blomstedt recorded Steenhammar live! SACD hybrid disc. Wilhelm Steenhammer (1871-1927), born in Stockholm, was a pianist, conductor, and composer who composed two operas, two piano concertos, a symphony, six string quartets, many songs, including "In the Woods" and "The Girl Who Came Back from a Meeting," and a second piece, He also composed a number of songs, including "In the Woods" and "The Girl Who Came Back from an Encounter," as well as cantatas such as "One Nation" and "Song," in which the second song "Sweden" is sung like "another national anthem. His music, which combines nobility and warmth, has been widely loved, along with the finely nuanced melodies created by the "songwriter" Steenhammer. Sibelius was a close friend of Steenhammer, who dedicated his String Quartet No. 4 to him, and Sibelius dedicated his Symphony No. 6 to Steenhammer. The Second Symphony, written in a blend of late romanticism and archaic style, is also called the "Symphony of the Doric Melody. "The first movement of the "Andante energico" begins with a three-quarter time dance step. The second movement, "Andante" incorporates sonata-like episodes in variations. The third movement is a light Swedish dance. The fourth movement 〈Final〉 consists of an introduction, three parts based on counterpoint and vocal polyphony, and a coda. first performed on April 22, 1915, at the 10th anniversary concert of the orchestra in Gothenburg. The score opens with a dedication by Steenhammar: "To my dear friends, the members of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra". The Serenade is a work that, together with the Second Symphony, has become an established part of the Swedish orchestra's repertoire. The idea came to him in 1907 while he was on vacation in Italy, the "land of his dreams," and he began composing the work around 1911, the same year as the Second Symphony, which premiered on January 30, 1914, with the Royal Swedish Orchestra conducted by Steenhammar, but was not as successful as the first performance, and was revised in 1919 and premiered in Gothenburg on March 3, 1920. It was revised in 1919 and premiered in Gothenburg on March 3, 1920. The "very fast and lively" Overture, "a little quiet at waltz tempo" Canzonetta and Scherzo, and "a little slow andante" Nocturne are played without interruption, ending with the "moderate tempo" Finale. The second movement, "at a minuet tempo," which was cut in the revision, was made an independent work under the title of "Reverenza" (BIS SA2359).Swedish conductor Herbert Blomstedt (1927-), born in Springfield, Massachusetts, has worked with Bruckner and Beethoven, as well as many Nordic works, including Carl Nielsen. Steenhammar's works include a newly released recording (BIS SA 2359) of "Songs" by Nämé Järvi and the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, which he recorded in its entirety in 1982 with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra under his baton.
