Description:
Also includes works by Toshio Hosokawa. Trondheim Sinfonietta's 20th anniversary album! The Trondheim Sinfonietta is an ensemble founded in 1998 by players from the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra and the Norwegian Air Force Band to perform music of the 20th and 21st centuries. Mantra" is the Sinfonietta's 20th anniversary album. The program consists of four works that evoke a "haunting of a deeper past. Toshio Hosokawa (1955-)'s "Drawing" is a sound drawing of the many primitive sensations experienced when "I dreamed that I was still in my mother's womb. The piece is performed by eight players: flute (with piccolo and alto flute), oboe, clarinet, piano, percussion, violin, viola, and cello. The Danish composer Bent Saanse (1958-) is known for creating works with a sound world like no other, and the Norwegian composer Arne Nordheim has said that his music "reminds me of something I have never heard before. Love Songs - The Second Lake of Love" was commissioned by the Caput Ensemble of Iceland.Inspired by a book about a 14th century peasant revolt in Auvergne, the sextet "Les Tuchins" was adapted for 15 players, and "Love Songs" was reworked for a 14-piece ensemble. American composer Ellen Lindqvist (1970-) studied at universities in Vermont and New York and teaches as an associate professor of composition at the Norwegian University of Technology and Natural Sciences (NTNU) in Trondheim. Mantra was co-commissioned by the Sinfonietta and Sinfonietta percussionist Espen Allberg (1975-) under the auspices of the Norwegian Arts Council. It was created as a "Concerto for Gamelan and Sinfonietta" with the religious nature behind traditional Indonesian gamelan music and the unique sound of the instruments in mind. Christine Nordervall (1957-) is another American composer. Chapel Meditations" was composed by her vocal ensemble during an "improvisation" session at the Bowdoin College Chapel in Brunswick, Maine, where they recorded a piece by Josquin des Prez.Nordervall participated in the recording of this album, with Sinfonietta pianist Else Boe playing the "plucked piano" strings. Conductor Kai Grinde Mullan (1987-) studied at the Norwegian National College of Music and the Hans Eisler University of Music in Berlin, and is also a composer. King International
