Description:

The beautiful singing of the Norwegian Soloist Choir in a church setting, including works by noted composer Saariaho, on SACD hybrid disc. The Norwegian Soloist Choir, founded in 1950 by composer Knut Nystedt and artistically directed since 1990 by Grete Pödeschen, is a highly regarded and popular chamber choir based in Oslo, Norway, whose music is characterized by insightful interpretation and broad, deep sound. This disc is the eighth release on the BIS label, following "The Light of My Life" (BIS SA 2184), an "epitaph" to Newstedt. We are woven by the same thread as dreams" (Shakespeare, The Tempest, Act 4, Scene 1, translated by Kazuko Matsuoka, Chikuma Bunko). The program was based on "Night and Dreams," an album title based on Prospero's lines, "a positive and hopeful work for the times that open up before us, as well as for our own times. Two works by the Danish pair Nørgaard (Nørgaard) were performed. The Danish writer Finn Mettling's "Song of Dreams," based on a Chinese poem, "tells of a boy's dream of his future self," interwoven with a melody reminiscent of a folk song.Sing, My Heart, Songs from a Garden You Do Not Know," with a text from Rilke's "Sonnets to Orpheus" (Part II, No. 21) and fragments from Schubert's "You Are My Rest" and "Ave Maria". Lachenmann's "Consolation II" draws on the oldest Christian prayer book in German, the Wessobrunn Prayer Book. Norwegian Alfredo Jansson's "Nocturne" is from Nietzsche's "Thus Spoke Zarathustra," which reads, "...... What does the deep midnight say? I went to sleep, I went to sleep - from a deep dream I awoke ......," and makes it into a neo-romantic song with experimental wordplay. Xenakis composed "Night," a textual collage of "Sumerian, Akkadian, ancient Greek Achaian languages and other phonemes," as a tribute to the political prisoners of his native Greece.Finland's Saariaho created a poem that speaks of Helderlin's "contrast between light and darkness" in the short piece "Conviction," describing it as "the comatose intersection of past and present," and used excerpts from Jacques Laveau's novel The Exchange of Light and Balzac's Seraphita as texts for "Night," which is divided into two parts, Farewell," which is divided into two parts.
