The complete 333 songs on 13 CDs, including solo, double, triple, and quartet songs, 13 of which have never been published and 31 of which are world premiere recordings. This is the largest album of songs in Canadian history, produced by the ATMA Classique in Canada. Massenet was first known as an opera composer and enjoyed great popularity during his lifetime. His fashionable and melodious songs were so pervasive that boutique clerks and restaurant staff hummed them just like pop music today. Many of his operas can be enjoyed today on recordings, but with the exception of a few songs he continued to write throughout his life, there has been no opportunity to hear them. The songs are interesting, ranging from the secret "Musume" about Japan to the posthumous "True Life". This album brings together some of the most beautiful voices in Quebec under the initiative of baritone Marc Boucher. Olivier Godin accompanied him on an 1854 Erard concert grand piano. Massenet was a piano virtuoso, and the piano parts of the songs are evident in the brilliant brushwork and presence. It is also noteworthy that the piano is played at 435 Hz, the pitch established in Paris in 1859.The accompaniment is not only piano, but also harpsichord, guitar, and harp, making for a varied and rewarding listening experience. The world of exquisite beauty of Massenet, who is called the composer most blessed with a fountain of melody in the history of music, can be enjoyed to the full.
