Emerging in the early '70s as the eccentric frontman of Boston proto-punk group Modern Lovers, the band, heavily influenced by the Velvet Underground, gained a cult following and recorded a widely acclaimed self-titled LP before disbanding in 1974 . Over the next decade, Richman reformed the band several times (under the name Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers), and even though they moved away from the hard, electric sound of their early years, their authentic storytelling and frank outlook on life have earned them a unique place in contemporary music history Jonathan Richman's 1987 release Modern Lovers 88 is now available on RSD. The trio, with drummer John Avila and guitarist Brennan Totten, fully embraces the lo-fi aesthetic for which he would become known as a solo artist.With a surprisingly rich sound, Modern Lovers 88, Richman's own favorite title for its upbeat acoustic and playful renditions of "I Love Hot Nights," "African Lady," "Gail Loves Me," and other tunes, is was praised by AllMusic as "quite rocking, with lots of doo-wop and Bo Diddley rhythms, and a sense of summer campfire merriment (but no tragedy)." This 35th anniversary edition of the release is pressed with all analog mastering from the original tapes by Kevin Gray of Cohearent Audio.
