Recorded in 1965, this album is widely regarded as one of the masterpieces Bobby Hutcherson created during his long association with the Blue Note label.
For this session, Hutcherson assembled a truly magnificent sextet featuring trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, James Spalding on alto saxophone and flute, Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Joe Chambers on drums.
This captivating album captures the duality of Hutcherson’s musical personality. Side A features post-bop masterpieces by Hutcherson, such as “Little B’s Poem,” written for his three-year-old son Barry, and the beautiful ballad “Tranquillity,” while Side B showcases Chambers’ more avant-garde compositions.
Although Hutcherson had taken piano lessons as a child, his love for jazz began in his teens. He listened to Milt Jackson’s records and worked tirelessly until he had saved enough money to buy his own vibraphone. After graduating from high school, Hutcherson continued to build his reputation in Los Angeles, and in 1960 he joined an ensemble co-led by Al Gray and Billy Mitchell. His association with Blue Note began in the early 1960s. By then, thanks to the connections he had built in the New York music scene, he had become a highly sought-after sideman for recording sessions.
