The first edition of the Chopin International Competition for Period Instruments was held in September 2018 and became a hot topic among piano fans and fans of ancient music. The Polish National Institute of Chopin (NIFC), which runs the competition, has released a long-awaited series of live recordings. The first installment features Poland's rising star Tomasz Rittel, the winner of the competition! Tomasz Rittel was born in 1995 in Lublin, Poland. He studied piano with Mikhail Voskresensky, harpsichord with Maria Uspenskaya, and period piano with Alexei Lyubimov at the Moscow Conservatory. He has won first prizes at the Artur Rubinstein International Young Pianists Competition (Poland), San Sebastian (Spain), Enschede (the Netherlands), Prague Conservatory (Czech Republic), and many other international competitions. Littell played three different period pianos in this competition. The "Frederik Buchholz," which he plays on the first two pieces, is a replica of the Polish maker said to have been Chopin's favorite during his Warsaw period, restored by Paul McNulty, a modern master craftsman known for his numerous historical piano reproductions.
