A Natural Sense of Style! First Place & Mazurka Award, Eric Guo The Real Chopin" project, in which Chopin's works are performed on instruments (original and restored) from the time of Chopin's life, has been undertaken by the Frederic Chopin Institute (NIFC/Narodowy Instytut Fryderyka Chopina) in Poland since its foundation. Five years after the first competition in 2018, in which Shigehiko Kawaguchi, Japan's world-renowned historical piano virtuoso, won the 2nd prize, 35 pianists who passed the preliminary rounds gathered in Warsaw for the 2nd Chopin International Period Instrument Competition in 2023. The "sounds of Chopin's time" were played continuously during the two-week period of the competition. While all six finalists chose the "Piano Concerto No. 1", Eric Guo, who won the first prize and the Mazurka Prize, is now available in a live recording of the competition. Eric Guo, who himself said that he had "almost no experience playing ancient instruments (including period piano)," adapted to period instruments and techniques at an astonishingly fast pace during the competition. He showed us the "Chopin era" on all stages of the first, second, and final rounds.
