The 2012 Queen Elisabeth International Competition, violin section Live recordings of the prizewinners, including the much-discussed playing of second-prize winner Tatsuki Narita Also featuring the work by Kenji Sakai, winner of the 2011 composition Grand Prize * Live recordings from the semi-finals and finals of the violin section of the Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition, one of the world's three great competitions, held in May 2012 - already available on disc. A particular attraction is the playing of the twenty-year-old Tatsuki Narita (born 1992), whose second prize attracted a great deal of attention. The set also includes Kenji Sakai's Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, performed by Narita - Sakai having become, in 2011, the first Japanese composer in thirty-five years to win the Grand Prize in the composition section. A release with plenty to talk about. * First-prize winner Baranov's account of the Shostakovich concerto is magnificent, with honed tone and extraordinary concentration. Narita's Paganini concerto, praised in the Belgian press for its elegance, has a genuinely noble sound, singing generously with a beautiful vibrato. The high register is beautifully focused and immaculately in tune, and the technique in the most virtuosic passages is precise and completely unforced. In the Ysaÿe solo work too, his carrying tone brings out the dynamism of the music to fine effect. * Sakai's work is a single movement lasting a little under nine minutes. At the outset the violin insists obsessively on the note G, over which a variety of elements come crashing in; at the close the G sounds once again as the piece ends. The audience response captured after the performance says a great deal about both the power of the work and the quality of Narita's playing. * The Queen Elisabeth International Competition was founded in 1951 (violin section) as the successor to the Eugène Ysaÿe Competition (first held in 1937), named after the great Belgian violinist. Sections for piano (from 1952) and composition (from 1953) followed, and a voice section was added in 1988. One section is held each year, so each returns every four years. King International
