Frederick Jefsky (1938–2021), an American composer known for works such as *36 Variations on “The Indomitable People.”* Darn Vandevelle, a close friend of Jeffsky’s who has recorded his works—including *The Road (Complete)* and *The Complete Nano-Sonatas*—for the Passacaille label, now presents this highly anticipated album featuring numerous world premiere recordings. The album title “Mensch” means “human being” in Yiddish and reflects his lifelong commitment to humanism and anti-establishment ideals. His debut works, *Chain of Thought* and *Cigarette Smoke*, composed when he was just 15, are particularly rare, and his neoclassical style—influenced by Ravel and Shostakovich—is fascinating. Another characteristic of Jeffsky’s piano works is that many include narration by the performer. In *From the Deep Abyss*, he recites Oscar Wilde’s letters from prison, and in *Mikhail Bakunin, the Living on Unearned Income*—dedicated to jazz musician Steve Lacy—he recites Bakunin’s line, “I am nothing but a bourgeois.” In “Awaken,” the fourth movement of Part 1 of *Dream*, the opening lines of Marx’s *Communist Manifesto* are recited. *Dream* is said to be based on Akira Kurosawa’s film of the same name; both works are filled with humor while conveying a serious message. *A Life* was written as a memorial on the day John Cage died. It is a tribute piece with a performance time of 4 minutes and 33 seconds. *Main Ingle* was composed as a set of variations on a Jewish song on the 50th anniversary of the Nazi pogrom against the Jews known as “Kristallnacht”; it seems to imply, through quotations from Beethoven and Wagner, that “German Romanticism was an inevitable path leading to Auschwitz.” *Rubinstein in Berlin* depicts the inner world of the great pianist Arthur Rubinstein in his youth through a narrative voice-over. Beginning with Chopin’s *Nocturne in C-sharp minor (Posthumous)*, the piece dramatically portrays the entire sequence of events—from his mounting lodging expenses with no concert engagements in sight, to being evicted from his Berlin hotel and attempting suicide, and finally being drawn back into the world of life through music—as if it were a play.
