Vaughan Williams (1872-1958)

Description:

The Vaughan Williams Society presents the second volume of the 150th anniversary of Vaughan Williams' birth! Albion Records, the independent label of the Vaughan Williams Society, has been featuring unknown, buried, and unpublished works by Leif Vaughan Williams. This album traces the great history of Vaughan Williams' contributions to British wind instruments, including his original works for brass band, a concerto that is one of the most important pieces in the tuba player's repertoire, and a world premiere recording of a brass band arrangement of the "English Folk Song Suite," considered a classic brass band masterpiece. The program traces the great history of Vaughan Williams' contributions to the British wind instrumental world. Ross Knight, the featured soloist, is currently a solo tuba player with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. He has studied at the Karajan Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic and has performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra, and the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich. In 2019, he won the second prize in the tuba division and the overall first prize in the "Aeolus International Wind Instrument Competition". In September 2022, he will take up a professorship at the Geneva Conservatory of Music. The United Kingdom is known as a major brass band country. Its history dates back to the 19th century, during the Industrial Revolution. The Tredegar Town Band has its origins in 1849 and has won numerous brass band competitions since it was officially formed in 1876. The band's musical director, Ian Porthouse (himself the band's principal cornetist since 1995), and Martin Brabbins, who has recorded the complete symphonies of Vaughan Williams for Hyperion and is currently music director of the English National Opera (his origins is also a euphonium and trombone) as guest conductor, will enhance the appeal of a sound tradition that has been cultivated for more than 150 years.
