This, too, could be described as a “rare gem” unique to the TOCCATA label. It’s an experiment in performing Beethoven’s chamber music works on the viola. While the Horn Sonata, for example, evokes a strong sense of “Ah, I see,” the “Grand Duo,” an arrangement of the Septet, is a truly astonishing gem. Hermann, the musician who first arranged this piece, was born in 1828 and died in 1907. The arrangement, with its perfectly balanced sound, reaches a level that could be called masterful, and there is absolutely no sense of awkwardness when listening to it in this instrumentation. Kleinholz, who arranged the “Nocturne”—originally written for string trio—was a composer of the same generation as Beethoven, born in 1765 and died in 1832. In upper-class households of that era, arrangements of symphonies, chamber music, and operas—adapted for easy performance at home—were extremely popular. The instrument used by Silverstone, known for its mellow tone, is an Amati made in 1620, and the piano is a Brümel built around 1865. Naxos Japan
