A rare Mass from the Renaissance has seen the light of day thanks to a masterful performance by Ensemble Gilles Binchois. Charles d'Argenteuil (c. 1500-1557) is little known today, but he was a bass singer in the Papal Chapel in Rome while establishing the Requiem for the Rite of Ritual. The Mass for the Dead recorded here is one of the 12 surviving liturgical works for the dead composed before 1550, and is a world premiere recording. Ensemble Gilles Banschois sheds light on an often overlooked part of the generation immediately following Josquin des Prez. The rich sounding style and the fine balance between imitation and homophony attest to the high degree of mastery reached by the composers of this period. King International
