Andreas Scholl

Description:

Andreas Scholl's unwaveringly beautiful voice Tuma's gem of a motet Born in the Czech Republic, Tuma (1704-1774) was one of the most important Viennese figures of the mid-18th century. Especially appreciated for his religious works, he composed both choral works with organ passages and choral and solo works with instrumental accompaniment, both using advanced techniques of counterpoint; he served as a model for composers of the late 18th century (Haydn and Mozart) when they wrote music for liturgical use. Tuma was born in Cantor to a father who was an organist, the eldest of four children. He was also a tenor singer in Prague churches and was extremely skilled on the theorbo and viola da gamba, which he is said to have played at the coronation of King Carl VI in Prague in 1723. After winning favor at the court of Elizabeth Christina, wife of King Karl VI, his style began to join the ranks of the old-fashioned of the time, but he was also cherished by Christina's daughter Maria Theresa, and received a generous pension and other good circumstances, finally entering the priesthood and dying in church. He wrote many compositions for an ensemble of about 15 instrumentalists and 5 singers. Tuma's ensemble was probably composed of the best singers of the time, and some of the passages are very technical. He also left many instrumental works, including a string quartet in three movements, which evokes the advent of the Classical period. The combination of the mature counterpoint techniques of the late Baroque and the expression of the new age can be fully appreciated in the Tuma. In the motet, Andreas Scholl's velvety tone, range, and superb technique perfectly meet the virtuoso demands of Tuma's male alto solo. The collaboration between Andreas Scholl and the Czech Ensemble Baroque began with Scholl's participation in the Czech premiere of Handel's oratorio Saul. This is the world premiere recording of the Tuma motet performed by a solo countertenor. King International
