Description:
Wah Wah 45s is proud to announce the first release of two special cover versions by the beloved Afro-electronic duo Raz & Afra on 12" vinyl!
First up is SIDE-A, a take on Aphex Twin's sleazy, eerie "Windowlicker," a song that took the dance floors at the turn of the century by storm. Raz explains, "This time around, we're going to take a different approach. This time we wanted to go in a different direction from our influences. When we heard that we were going to cover this song, everyone said, 'But how? ' We wanted to recreate what elements of the original and make it our own. We had an idea of what elements of the original we wanted to recreate and how we wanted to present them within our own sound spectrum. It was a lot of fun to work on, and it really gets the live show going."
The result is a heavily percussive reinterpretation, full of eerie mute vocals, funky guitars, and spine-tingling synths that elevate the track to sound like a future Afro-house anthem, but still respect the original source material.
On the other hand, "Going Back To My Roots" has become a staple of Razz & Afra's live sets, and Razz reiterates that the song means a lot to them. I love this song," he says. The lyrics resonate with me, and the song is about the meaning of connection with the land and the people. The history of this song is also interesting. From Hugh Masekela and Orlando Julius to Odyssey and Richie Havens. So we wanted to add our own taste. You can't choose your roots or where you were born. It will always be a part of you, and we want to celebrate that."
Written and first recorded by Lamont Dodger in 1977, "Going Back To My Roots" was covered by Richie Havens in 1980, and later by the disco band Odyssey in 1981, making it a crossover hit. Razz & Afrah deftly expresses their own unique dance floor sensibility, and it is one of the songs that has been highly favored by BBC 6 Music.
