Description:
Unknown good works of early German Romanticism World premiere recording of flute sonatas by an early German Romantic composer born in the same year as Carl Maria von Weber. Johann Christian Friedrich Schneider (1786-1853), almost forgotten today, studied at the University of Leipzig and then became a pianist, giving the first performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 on November 28, 1811. The following year, in 1812, he became organist at St. Thomas' Church in Leipzig, and in 1821 he was appointed conductor in Dessau; in 1824 he was music director of the Niederrhein Music Festival, where he premiered his own oratorio "Southern Wind"; he was energetic and wrote seven operas, four masses, six oratorios, 25 He also composed seven operas, four masses, six oratorios, 25 cantatas, 23 symphonies, seven piano concertos, sonatas for violin, flute, and cello, instrumental works for piano and organ, and numerous vocal works. A German review in 1838 described Schneider as "one of the greatest living masters of German music," and judging from the quality of this flute sonata, it is a wonder why Schneider's name has faded from the public consciousness, but it may have something to do with the name being too common. Schneider composed the first three sonatas in a four-movement format, a groundbreaking departure from the previous image of the flute sonata as a mishmash of dainty variations and operatic themes. The booklet (English, 12 pages) includes commentary by Ruggieri on the performance.
