Yet another artist from Europe has emerged, captivated by the sounds of Brazilian music’s golden age! This is the debut album from the duo Crio Crio, featuring Luiza Monteiro—a singer, songwriter, and actress born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and based in Austria—and Dustin Brown, best known for his recent collaboration with German producer and musician Peki Momes! In their own words, their sound vision is “neither straight-up disco nor straight-up samba, nor strictly old-school, but rather something that draws inspiration from all of these to create something both contemporary and nostalgic.” Influenced not only by Gal Costa and Jorge Ben, but also by Bara Desegio and Se-C-C, their modern fusion sound skillfully blazes its own trail. It is music that celebrates freedom, movement, love, and life, and its greatest charm lies in the way it is interwoven with moments of introspection. While songs like “Amor Doente” and “Marsem Dar Pe” depict relationships that defy clear answers, “Menina Passarinho” captures both the anxiety and the inevitability of walking the path of life through music. For Luiza, deepening her passion for music alongside her long-standing career in theater was both inevitable and difficult. Brown’s production follows a similar logic. Early ideas are often constructed without clear reference points; while rhythms and vocal elements reminiscent of Brazil are incorporated later, the goal is not to recreate Brazil itself. Techniques such as analog technology, tape, ribbon microphones, and live ensemble recording create a tactile texture that reflects the duo’s strong interest not only in the result but also in the process. Particularly noteworthy are “BemQuerer,” with its catchy chorus that makes you want to sing along, grounded in the street vibe of authentic samba, and “VempraCasa,” characterized by a Brazilian boogie flavor with a cosmic atmosphere. The album concludes with “ACordoMeuSonho.” It is a quiet declaration of intent: a stance that refuses to yield to unfamiliar surroundings and believes in the strength of difference. It is less a conclusion and more a continuation, with the central question left unresolved. “I’ve begun to understand that I can belong in many places at once,” Luisa reflects. “And perhaps that is something I should accept.” The lyrics of the track “Raiz” translate to: “I cherish the burning sun and the cold air. Constant change is my companion.” In Clio Clio, this idea is vividly expressed through sound, storytelling, and collaboration. It is a debut work that blends exploration and conviction, rooted in tradition yet shaped by distance.
