Description:

Backhaus' 140th birthday and 55th death anniversary project. The latest SACD release of the historic 1969 live performance in Osijch (Austria), which was the "last concert" about a week before his death! For the first time, the artwork of the first German Decca release has been restored on the jacket. For this release, the historical masterpiece is newly reissued from the original master tapes in its home country! The live recordings of the great German pianist Wilhelm Backhaus (1884-1969) at the Abbey Church of Osiachen in Carinthia, Austria, on June 26 and 28, 1969, were his "last concerts". In his youth, Backhaus was known as the "Lion King of the Keyboard" for his unparalleled virtuosity, but after his middle age, he repeatedly presented his 32 piano sonata cycle of Beethoven to the world, expressing the depth of his musical views through Beethoven's music. Backhaus remained active in the year of his death, recording Beethoven's Piano Sonatas Nos. 3, 13, 16, 22, 24, and 27 in stereo for DECCA in Geneva's Victoria Hall from April 9 to 14.On April 18, he gave a Beethoven recital at the Berlin Philharmonic (later released on CD by Audite). The "Last Concert" was also programmed around two of Beethoven's piano sonatas. The concert was also a fundraiser for the installation of a new organ in the Osija Abbey Church, and was therefore flanked by familiar works by Mozart and Schubert. However, during the first half of the June 28 concert, while performing Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 18, Backhaus became ill in the coda of the third movement and left the stage, saying, "I need some rest. After a short intermission, his secretary announced a change in the program, and the first half of the concert concluded with Schumann's "In the Evening" and "Why. During the long intermission that followed, doctors strongly advised Backhaus to cancel the concert. However, the 85-year-old Backhaus was very determined and took the stage for the last time, having his secretary inform him that "Professor Backhaus would like to end the concert with an improvisation by Schubert.Backhaus was admitted to a hospital in Philach, Carinthia's second largest city, where he died a week later.
