From “Nostalgia,” the independent label of Toyohiko Sato—a leading figure in the lute world and a world-renowned master whom Japan is proud to call its own—comes a collection of lute songs performed by Kayoko Kato and Toru Sakurada. Kayoko Kato is a soprano who studied at Nagoya College of Music, the National Conservatory of Music in Zwolle, the Netherlands, and the Conservatory of Music in Dierburg. She currently serves as the director of the vocal ensemble “Lira” and is a member of the Tokai Baroque Project. Toru Sakurada is an early music string player who studied under Toyohiko Sato at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and currently serves as the secretary-general of the Lute & Early Guitar Society of Japan. This recording is the result of a collaboration between these two musicians—pioneers in Japan’s early music scene who studied in the Netherlands—who hit it off and prepared for the session through numerous rehearsals and lessons. This collection features 16th- and 17th-century lute songs by Italian composers such as Caccini, Monteverdi, and Frescobaldi; French composers such as Gedron and Lambert; and English composers such as Purcell, Blow, and Lanière. String instruments have long been the primary accompaniment for singing—regardless of era or region—because they “can convey nuances such as dynamics and vibrato in harmony with the voice.” Here, you can fully appreciate the diversity (both breadth and depth) of expression offered by the combination of voice and archlute.
