Jansons, conducting his first opera in five years, was the focus of much attention in the opera world even before the opening of the season. He manipulated the orchestra at will to bring out the full splendor and penetrating beauty of Tchaikovsky's music, while keeping away from excessive sweetness. Hareheim, who directed the production, was named director of the year by Opernwelt magazine in 2007, and his new production of "Parsifal" at the Bayreuth Festival in 2009 won accolades. He is one of the most popular and talented opera directors in Europe today, especially in German-speaking countries.In "Onegin," he uses his signature flashback technique to focus on Onegin's story throughout the entire act. The kaleidoscopic setting, with its succession of Russian historical motifs, is beautifully and skillfully set by Philippe Fülhofer to great effect. Among the singers, Bo Skowhus' Onegin is superb.
