Description:
After the success of the first collection (8.574270), NAXOS presents a new series of Mozart's complete masses, performed by the West German Radio Choir of Cologne and the Cologne Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Christoph Poppen. The second collection includes "Great Mass" in C minor, K.427, which was never completed, and "Missa Previs" K.258, which was written in 1776 for Count Spohr (Spohr). The Credo and Agnus Dei were left unfinished, and in recent years, several supplemental editions have been made. In this recording, the edition published in 1989 with corrections by Franz Beyer, a musicologist and an authority on Mozart studies, was used. The C major "Missa Brevis" (Short Mass) is thought to have been composed for the ordination of Count Spohr, and is a simple but cheerful work with a festive atmosphere throughout. Four soloists, all of whom are active in German opera houses and orchestras, are featured in this production, and each sings beautifully. The soprano Catalina Conradi's limpid singing is a particular highlight. Poppen also brings out the solemn beauty of the work in this recording. Naxos Japan
