Description:
Grażyna Bacewicz (1909-1969) was the first Polish female composer to gain international recognition. She studied violin and piano with her father, entered the Warsaw Conservatory in 1928, graduated in 1932, and immediately began her career as a violinist and composer, receiving a scholarship to study in Paris, where she was trained by Nadia Boulanger at the Ecole Normale de Musique. As a violinist, she studied under Carl Flesch and honed her talents as a performer and composer. Many of her works are mainly for violin, but the "Concerto for Strings," written after the war, is a work with a vigorous sound and bold movements in a style modeled after the Baroque period, and it has a mysterious charm that somehow arouses the listener's fighting instinct. The "Symphony for Strings," written two years earlier, is also full of vitality and desire, overflowing with a glistening light. It is the kind of music that, once you hear it, you cannot get out of, as if you are sinking into a bottomless swamp. The "Piano Quintet No. 1," which Smoly herself arranged for chamber orchestra, is one of the most popular of her works, but this arranged version, which emphasizes the power and roughness of the original, is even more challenging to listen to.
