Born into a prominent musical family, Franz Benda (1709-1786) had an extremely idealistic childhood, learning oboe and other instruments from his father, organ, composition, and chanting from the local church cantor, and becoming a church choir member. While serving at the court in Dresden, he met Kwanz, known for his flute works, and was introduced to the Prince of Prussia, the future Friedrich II, where he was recognized. He was a truly gifted violinist, whom the critic C. Barney described as "a great genius. His violin works, which were written during the transition period from the Baroque to the Classical period, are often clear and easy to understand without unnecessary ornamentation, and are full of expansive and bright musical ideas.
