Samuel Coleridge Taylor was born in London and was a pioneering black musician of high repute. After attending the Royal College of Music and studying under Stanford, he began his career as a conductor and composer while teaching at the Croydon School of Music. Although he struggled with various prejudices due to the color of his skin, Coleridge-Taylor gradually broadened his activities and earned the nickname "dark-skinned Mahler" in the early 20th century after a successful concert tour as a conductor in the United States. This album includes the Overture to "Hiawatha," one of a series of works based on an episode of "Hiawatha" (a 16th century Mohawk Indian warrior) that fascinated him, the Suite "Otello," which includes the emotional "Song of the Willows," four waltzes, and many other works that make the most of Coleridge-Taylor's extraordinary talent.
