What would happen if you played Brahms’ Symphony No. 1—which, among the many symphonies out there, is arguably the most “over-the-top and suffocating” and is known for its feverish development—as a piano duet? The answer is right here. For example, take the opening of the first movement—one of the piece’s trademarks—with its lingering sustained notes and deep timpani strikes. There are certainly moments where, even with four hands and twenty fingers, it’s difficult to recreate that feverish intensity using only the piano. Nevertheless, it’s unique how the characteristic of piano duets—where each individual note resonates far more clearly than in an orchestra—gives rise to a different kind of stifling intensity than the original piece, one where the notes seem to swarm together in a somewhat chaotic manner.
