Description:

The latest reissue of one of the pinnacle analog recordings by EMI, the Previn disc, on one disc! The superb recording by Bishop & Parker, recorded in 1977. Newly reissued from the original analog master tape. The latest reissue of one of Messiaen's most famous works (2023 marks the 115th anniversary of Messiaen's birth and the 75th anniversary of the completion of his compositions), with new commentary. Previn's clear interpretation has made the piece widely known to classical music users. This is a well-known recording by Bishop & Parker, which was previously released on a commercial SACD single-layer disc, but this time the entire 80+ minute work is included on one disc. The sound quality has been further improved. The beauty of the sound and the various instruments is a must-hear! The master was digitized at 192kHz/24bit from the original analog master tapes in Japan and mastered separately for this release on the SACD and CD layers. New commentary included. As you know, "Turangalila Symphony" completed in 1948 is one of Messiaen's masterpieces and one of the most famous works composed in the 20th century. The piece is performed relatively frequently and is probably the most recognizable piece of music that uses the extremely special ondes martenots. It is a multilayered, atonal piece, and is certainly considered a difficult work, as each of its 10 movements uses distinctive harmony and the language characteristic of Messiaen at the time. Originally commissioned by the Koussevitzky Foundation, the entire work was premiered in 1949 by the Boston Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Bernstein (Bernstein did not make a session recording). It is not known if Previn ever heard this piece in the U.S. or elsewhere at that time, but it seems that he liked Messiaen and was especially fond of this piece (he performed it with the NHK Symphony Orchestra in Japan in his later years). The recording was made in 1977, and since Messiaen's recommendation, the piece had been performed several times since it was featured in a concert two years before (Mr. Takagi in this commentary describes the details including the circumstances at that time). It is clear that this recording was made with careful preparation and with full anticipation. Since its release, Previn's reputation as one of Messiaen's most important interpreters has grown.Previn's clear and precise expression, coupled with the excellence of the recording, not only brought out the charm of the piece, but also made the piece widely known, and this disc is the greatest achievement of its source. Until the 1970s, there were few recordings of this piece itself, and the only well-known recording in Japan was by Ozawa & the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. It is no exaggeration to say that the appearance of the Previn recording opened up the difficult "Turangalila Symphony" as a contemporary music piece and led to an increase in the frequency of its performance and the creation of many subsequent recordings. In this sense, it is an important recording. In addition, the recording by Bishop & Parker showed the perfection of analog recording. The greatness of the recordings of those days can be fully confirmed on this SACD. (1/2)
