Description:

[From Bacewicz to the Beatles: Nikolai Altstedt Weaves Together the Innovation and Poetic Spirit of the 1960s] This album, presented by the visionary Nikolai Altstedt and his close collaborators, is an ambitious concept album that takes listeners on a journey through the 1960s—a decade that shook the foundations of music history. At its core lies the Cello Concerto No. 2 by the Polish composer Bacewicz, who has garnered significant attention in recent years. A symphonic masterpiece that Altshtett marveled at for its ability to “evoke the entire world with just a few notes,” this work is structured not merely as a showcase for the cello’s virtuosity, but as the backbone of the composition—imparting order and structure to a world of avant-garde sounds that can often seem chaotic. Though it went unrecognized for many years following an unfortunate failure at its premiere, this work’s true value is reexamined through a striking performance with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Maxim Emelyanichev. The album also features Britten’s Sonata, with Emelyanichev on piano; Feldman, whose music exudes a serene tension; and Veresh’s Sonata, which Altschedt cherishes as a “monument of the solo repertoire.” Together, these pieces vividly capture the spirit of an era where avant-garde and tradition intersected. The album concludes with a cover of the Beatles’ classic “Blackbird”—a song said to liken a Black woman seeking freedom to a black bird. For this track, lute virtuoso Thomas Dunford was invited as a guest to record in a Portuguese church; in addition to Dunford’s understated vocals, one can also hear Altschedt’s voice echoing like an echo. This miraculous take, which makes use of the sound of a bell ringing at midnight by chance, leaves a deep and beautiful resonance on the album. From the shock of Bacewicz to the treasures of popular music, this is an anthology that connects the innovation and lyricism of the 1960s through the cello. *Japanese liner notes for the domestic edition… Takaki Yazawa Naxos Japan
