John Casken, born in 1949, is one of Britain's most highly regarded composers for his distinctive style. Drawing inspiration from literature, legend, and art, his works have been performed worldwide, including at the BBC Proms, and have earned him numerous awards. This choral collection is deeply rooted in the magnificent natural landscapes, history, and poetry of Northumberland, his home base in northeast England. It conveys a strong connection to the region through motifs of coastlines and stones. Conductor Peter Broadbent and the Joyful Company of Singers undertook this recording after two years of close collaboration with the composer. Many of the recorded pieces were written for local ensembles such as the choirs of Durham Cathedral and Newcastle Cathedral, the Northern Sinfonia Choir, and the Cockertown Chamber Choir, which Skegan himself founded. The choir takes on diverse roles, serving as the voice of the community and as a storyteller. The lyrics span a wide range, from the earliest English poet Cadmon to contemporary poets.
