Roberto Gerard is a Catalan composer who studied piano with Granados and is the only Spaniard to have studied with Schoenberg in Vienna. He returned to Barcelona in 1928, worked on the twelve-tone technique about 20 years later, and became a leader of avant-garde music in England, where he lived in exile. This album contains works he composed during his time in Spain under the influence of Stravinsky and Bartók. Alegrias" is a humorous suite in four movements inspired by flamenco, composed in the early 1940s. Also included is "Pedrelliana," a 1954 reworking of a portion of the symphonic work "Homage to Pedrell," composed to commemorate the centennial of Felipe Pedrell's birth in 1941. The album's centerpiece, Don Quixote, was written for chamber orchestra, and here we hear the version that, after various incarnations, was revised for performance at the Royal Opera in 1950. The premiere was choreographed by Ninette de Valois, with Robert Helpmann dancing Don Quixote and Margo Fonteyn Dulcinea. (Naxos Japan)
