Description:

Oscar Lorenzo Fernández, a composer who was about 10 years younger than Villa-Lobos and whom Villa-Lobos trusted as his right-hand man, died at the age of 50, leaving many Brazilian music scholars wishing that he had lived longer. He left many masterpieces for piano and song, and at the time of his death he had composed two symphonies, one of which, "Batuki," the final movement of the "Reisado do Pastoreio Suite" (Suite of Three Doctors of the Rural East), made him famous worldwide. The exciting crescendo of stimulating rhythms and colors is captivating at first listen! -- Yusuke Kimoto (Conductor/President of the Villa-Lobos Society of Japan)Like many Brazilian composers of the 20th century, Fernandes started from a nationalistic style and tried to integrate them with international techniques and styles. The "Rural Three Doctor Festivals of the East" suite is a representative work along early nationalistic lines. The third piece, "Batuki," which is easy to remember and easy to groove to, is one of the standard pieces in the Brazilian orchestral masterpieces. It was also performed at the Brazilian Independence Bicentennial Concert in Tokyo in 2022 to great acclaim. Symphony No. 1 is a powerful work in four movements inspired by Bartók. While aiming for pure music with a classical structure, Brazilian rhythms and melodies appear here and there. Symphony No. 2, about an adventurer who goes into the jungle in search of emeralds and faces threats from the natives and nature, is a dramatic work with a strong character of title music. The composer passed away without hearing the first performance. The domestic edition comes with a Japanese-language commentary by Yusuke Kimoto (conductor and president of the Villa-Lobos Society of Japan). Naxos Japan
